The fort is built with huge blocks of black basalt rock which gives it a shiny appearance. That is why locals have named it as 'Diamond Fort'. During the 1720s, Kanhoji Angre built this for with the intention of safeguarding the accumulated treasure of his kingdom. For this reason the fort has very high and strong walls on all four sides. During the 1740s, a major battle took place between Peshwa Balaji Bajirao and his half-brother, Shivaji's son Sambhaji, in parts of Alibag. Kanhoji Angre is played as an ally of the young Balaji, who defeats his half-brother, killing over thirty men in his army and taking Sambhaji as a prisoner. Hirakot provided safe haven to Balaji Bajirao and his army.

In the 18th century, Hirakot fort was ruled by Kanhoji Angre's sister Anandibai. In 1793 Jai Singh, a Maratha noble, attacked Hirakot but could not breach the fortifications and suffered heavy losses on the war front. After Anandibai's death, Maharaja Jai Singh took over Hirakot and the surrounding area. Baburao, the chief general of the Shinde clan, tricked Jai Singh, killed him along with his men, and shortly afterwards took over the Hirakot command. But his tenure was short lived as Jai Singh's eldest son recaptured the fort and present-day Raigad district in 1807, bringing back the Angres to power.
