Murud-Janjira is one of the most popular places to visit in Konkan. Janjira Fort, one of the strongest sea forts in India, stands on an island just off the coastal village of Murud.
The name Janjira comes from the Arabic word “jazeera”, meaning island; Murud was once known in Marathi as Habsan, and the fort’s name combines the Konkani and Arabic words for island, “morod” and “jazeera”. Other interesting places nearby are the sea forts of Revdanda, Kasa, Underi, Khanderi and Korlai.
