6. Suvarnadurg Fort
Suvarnadurg is a fort located on a small island in the Arabian Sea between Mumbai and Goa. The fort also includes another small fort called Kanakadurg at the base of Harnai port on the coast. The construction of the fort is attributed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. The reason for this is that the main door leading inside the fort is of Gomukhi style.
The fort is built on an island and the fort is spread over an area of about 5 acres. This fort is of Jaladurg type and its height is 1400 feet. A.D. The word Bankot means fifty-two forts. The Bankot fort or Himmatgad was under British control until Shivaji Maharaj captured it and incorporated it into the Swaraj.
