6. Suvarnadurg Fort

Suvarnadurg is a fort located on a small island in the Arabian Sea between Mumbai and Goa. The fort also includes another small fort called Kanakadurg at the base of Harnai port on the coast. The construction of the fort is attributed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. The reason for this is that the main door leading inside the fort is of Gomukhi style.

The fort is built on an island and the fort is spread over an area of about 5 acres. This fort is of Jaladurg type and its height is 1400 feet. A.D. Shivaji Maharaj landed in Konkan around 1657, he saw the sea closely. At that time, the Mughals, the Siddhis of Janjira, the British, and the Portuguese were mainly among the foreign powers. Of these, except the Mughals, the other three had great influence on the west coast. Without paying tribute to these three, no boats could pay the sea. 7. Bankot Fort

The word Bankot means fifty-two forts. The Bankot fort or Himmatgad was under British control until Shivaji Maharaj captured it and incorporated it into the Swaraj. The fort stands on Bankot river, where the famous river Savitri meets the giant Arabian sea. Crossing the river Savitri looks like a creek and is called Bankot creek. This is the case with most of the rivers in Konkan. At high tide, seawater enters upstream from the mouth of the river, making it difficult to tell which is the river and which is the bay. Bankot River was a major sea trade route in ancient times. Prehistoric caves called Dasgaon and Mandangad tell the same story. Bankot Fort is also known as Himmatgad and Fort Victoria.

The Vyaghreshwar temple is about 1000 years old and is located on the banks of a river in Asud. A 15-minute trek through coconut, betel, mango and cashew trees takes you to the temple. A natural spring provides water to the stone-carved Gaumukha (Gaumukh) throughout the year. The Vyaghreshwar temple is built in the Hemadpanthi style of architecture and has a Swambhu Shivalinga. A hall leads to the sanctorum (gabhar) which houses the Swayambhu Shivalinga. The outer roof of the sanctum is supported on carved wooden pillars. In front stands a large sculpture of Nandi, Shiva's vehicle. There are sculptures of dancers on the dais of this temple. There is also a small temple of Kalbhairava.
